It was already 6pm yesterday when I made it to Comic Odyssey in Galleria for
FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! Upon arriving there were still hordes of people lined up to get their free comics, so I decided to go inside and get
Action Comics #864 first. I chanced upon fellow comic book geek Mark Cerbo there, and as we were talking Skrulls I conveniently spotted Secret Invasion/Superman Birthright/Wolverine artist
Leinil Yu lingering around. Apparently hotshot artist (and occasional Yu inker)
Gerry Alanguilan was there signing comics earlier and I missed him by a few minutes. Dang.
Anyway, I thought, "Cool, I'll just chat with Leinil in a bit after I get my Superman fix." Then I saw the last remaining sketch cover variant of
Secret Invasion #1 (Marvel's biggest event this summer)! I figured I might as well have Leinil sign it (after all, I'm a big fan of his work). I got that, plus my Superman fix, paid, then went up to the big Yu to have his way with it. A smiley face with a blood spatter on it (haha) would have been okay with me, and I think he was almost about to draw me as a Skrull, but instead Nil gave me this:

Leinil: "Tangina ang pangit haha! Sige pirmahan ko na rin kasi baka walang maniwala na ginawa ko to. "
Me: "OK lang haha! Other hotshot artists have done sketchcards with just Spidey eyes. haha!"
I'm assuming a crappy (peace Leinil! :p) illustration by a superstar penciller counts as a collectible also.
So after chatting with him about Marty McFly (his band) and other stuff, I decided to go on to my Free Comic Book Day binge. Customers were only supposed to get a maximum of 10 comic books, but since it was almost closing time the Comic Odyssey guys decided to ditch the rule and let people finish off their stock. Pillaging never felt so good.
Last night I suggested to Macy that we should go on a Free Comic Book Day tour next year. I can just imagine the loot. haha
(Sorry Luv, there wasn't anything left last night that you would have loved. Definitely next year!)
Wait. I can't believe I just bought a Marvel book. I hope the DC gods don't banish me to the Phantom Zone. :p
EDIT: In Secret Invasion, I noticed that Leinil's visual cues on Skrulled characters involved shadows on their faces. Spidey had one shadowy portrayal too many. Was Leinil giving me a clue via this sketch? hmmm...
